Agnes Cochran, a native of Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland, married George Hutton on 29 Dec 1871 in Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. At the time of the 1881 Scotland census, she resided in Glasgow, Lanarkshire with her four children, Agnes, Mary, Elizabeth, and George. Agnes immigrated with those children to the United States, arriving in New York on 9 Dec 1881 on the steamship Anchoria. Her husband George had apparently immigrated earlier than his wife and children. The family settled in Mercer County, New Jersey.

Three years later, in March of 1885, Agnes was widowed, after having two more children. Shortly thereafter, at the time of the 1885 New Jersey state census, she resided only with her oldest child Agnes. (Her five other children lived with the Thomas family.) The widow married Charles Bateman about 1888. The couple had two additional children together. However, Agnes was widowed for the second time on 20 Jan 1893 when her husband was struck by a train as he and his stepson George searched for coal along the railroad tracks. By 1895, the widow was reunited with all her children under one roof, the exception her oldest daughter, who had married. Agnes died in 1901 at age 49 and was interred in Greenwood Cemetery.
