Services for Dr. Clovis M. Clough, 92, of Plainview will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 6, 2009, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Bruce Green officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park under the direction of Bartley Funeral Home.
Dr. Clough died Thursday, July 2, 2009, at Covenant Hospital Plainview. Dr. Clovis Clough, 92, was born March 16, 1917, in Kansas City, Kan. He moved to Plainview in 1920 with his parents, Dr. Clovis Clough Sr. and Maude Montgomery Clough. Dr. Clough was a graduate of Plainview High School and attended Texas Tech University before graduating from the Northern Illinois College of Optometry. He was a medical technician in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving with Patton's 3rd Army in Northern France, Central Europe and the Rhineland during the Battle of the Bulge. Before deploying to Europe, he married Army Nurse Corps Lt. Ann McElveen, a fellow soldier at Fort Bliss, Texas. They were married 64 years until Mrs. Clough's death in 2007. After the war, Dr. Clough returned to Plainview to establish an optometry practice. He retired in 1987. Dr. Clough was an accomplished musician, and in the late 1940s he and a group of Plainview area friends formed the group "Old Masters of Swing." The group performed jazz, big band and swing concerts at events throughout the Panhandle and South Plains area for more than 50 years before disbanding in the late 1990s. He served on the board of the Plainview Symphony and was a member of the Kiwanis Club and St. Mark's Episcopal Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Clough Miller of Austin. His son, Stephen Nelson Clough of Palo Alto, Calif., also preceded him in death. The family suggests memorials to St. Mark's Episcopal Church of Plainview.
