SALISBURY, NC George Norman Cloninger, 80, VA hospital, died Jan. 20, 2002, at home.

He was a native of Gaston County, son of the late Loy W. and Lanie Stroupe Cloninger.

GRAVESIDE SERVICES: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia

VISITATION: 12-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Ward Funeral Service, Gastonia

He was a former resident of Dallas, N.C., served in the U.S. Army in WWII in the Philippines, and participated in the liberation of Bataan. He was retired from Akers Motor Lines, Gastonia.

SURVIVORS: Brothers, Billy Cloninger, McConnells, S.C., Harold Cloninger, Clover, S.C.; sisters, Jean Robinson and Pauline Cook, Rock Hill, S.C., Betty Rice, Gastonia
