Returning to Texas, he was superintendent and manager of cotton mills at West and Hillsboro for four year periods but injured his health. After recuperating in the Pacific Northwest, he returned to Waco where he helped organize the Clifton-Coffield Mfg. Co. which engaged in the manufacturing of numerous canvas goods.
Clifton was the president of the Young Men's Business League and one of the organizers and first president of the 1910 Waco Cotton Palace Association. He also served as chairman of the board of First Natl. Bank, Behrens Drug Co. and Clifton-Simpson Co.
He married Mary Helen Lacy on Aug. 31, 1904; they were the parents of 3 children.
