RHONDA P. BERGHOFF, of Fort Wayne, died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016, in Indianapolis, Ind. after a long battle with Alzheim er's. Born April 4, 1934, in Fort Wayne, she was a daughter of Herb and Florence Clemens. Rhonda has five children, all married, blessing her with 16 grandchildren. Her children include Air Force Col. (Ret) Thomas A. (Liana) Berghoff of Los Angeles, Calif. and their children, Taylor, Michael, Brenna, and Matthew; son, Michael R. (Kristin) Berghoff (Kristin) of Indianapolis and their children, Lauren, Ellyn and John Robert; son, John M. (Renee) Berghoff of Chicago, Ill. and their children, Natalie and Evan; daughter, Laura (Scott) Bless of Bloomington, Ind. and their sons, Charlie and Tate; and son, Dr. Keenan (Molly) Berghoff of Kansas City, Mo. and their children, Hannah, Grace, Luke, Max, and Jack. Rhonda graduated from Central Catholic High School in Fort Wayne in 1952. She attended college at St. Mary of the Woods in Terre Haute, Ind. from 1953 to 1954 before graduating from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., in 1956. She worked for American Airlines as a stewardess from 1957 until 1959 before marrying Thomas H. Berghoff in 1959. Rhonda then taught grade school at Adams Elementary in Fort Wayne before committing her life to raising five children. Rhonda devoted her life to her five children putting them all through St. Jude Elementary School and Bishop Dwenger High School before all graduating from Purdue University and Indiana University. Whether it be packing school lunches in the morning, chauffeuring her boys to 6:30 a.m. weekday Mass to serve as altar boys, treating cuts with methylate, she was never more than a step away. Rhonda had a fondness and love for all children and often entertained them by getting out pots and pans as toys or leading a round of the "inanimate object" game. Being blessed with 25 nieces and nephews, she cherished her role as Aunt Rhonda and was always enthusiastic to hear what her nieces and nephews had to say. Because many nephews lived blocks away, she was a pro bono barber that included an endless plate of Berghoff leftovers. She was a lifelong member of St. Jude Parish while in Fort Wayne and was often found in the Chapel of Perpetual Adoration in the middle of the night. She held various positions with small businesses before retiring from Parkview Hospital. She is also survived by her brother, Daniel P. Clemens. She was preceded in death by her sister, Carroll Clemens; brother, Philip Clemens; and former husband, Thomas H. Berghoff. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2016, at St Jude Catholic Church, with calling one hour prior. Calling also from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, 2016, at D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home 1140 Lake Ave., with a rosary at 4:30 p.m. Entombment in Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne. Memorials may be made to the National Right to Life or the Alzheimer's Association of Fort Wayne.
