Obituary from the Greenfield Gazette and Courier Greenfield, Ma., Saturday September 15, 1906 page 4

Death of Mrs. Wm. Henry Allen
Mrs. Elizabeth Clapp Allen, wife of the late William Henry Allen, died Sunday at her home on Main street where she had lived so many years. The loss of her husband was a heavy grief, and while perhaps not positively affecting her health, it seemed to make her less anxious to live, and possibly affecting her illness. She died of paralysis of the intestines, with which she was taken ill last Thursday. Mrs. Allen was a women of quiet and retiring habits, gifted with a very gracious manner and sweet temper, who gave her first thoughts to the making of a happy home for her family. But her life was one of generous impulses and practical philanthropy, as evidenced by her work as president of a sewing school formed some years ago for inspiring poor children, and by her efforts for the Sewing Society of All Souls church of which she was also president. She was a regular attendant at All Souls church and a generous giver. Mrs. Allen was notable, for sound practical judgment and her advice on any business matter was penetrating and her husband found her counsel of great value in his successful business career as head of the Franklin Savings Institution. Mrs. Allen was fond of books, and a favorite evening occupation was reading aloud to Mr. Allen.
Mrs. Allen was a daughter of Henry W. Clapp and Eliza Baldwin, was born in New York in 1829, and came to Greenfield with her father in 1835. Their home was the present residence of Arthur D. Potter. She married Mr. Allen in 1848. He died August 8,1905. Mrs. Allen leaves six children, Charles of Greenfield, treasurer of the Franklin Savings Inst., Cornelia Tilden, wife of Alexander G. Hackstaff of New York, Franklin Allen of the firm of S. Allen's Sons of Greenfield, William Henry Allen of Concord, Elizabeth Clapp, wife of Charles H. Keith and Miss Marion Allen Allen of Greenfield.
The funeral took place Wednesday at the home, Rev. J. D. Reid officiating. The burial was in Green River cemetery. The bearers were her sons, Charles, Franklin and William Henry, her son-in-law, Mr. Hackstaff and C. H. Keith, and her nephew, William S. Allen.
