Mr. Claflin was a self-employed contractor for 35 years. He previously worked for Toleman Hardware, Adams, for 10 years and for BEC Electric, Syracuse, for five years.
Mr. Claflin was a Jefferson County deputy sheriff and full- and part-time police officer in Adams for 22 years. He was a part-time bus driver for Belleville Central School District and an electrician at Great Lakes Cheese, Adams, for 14 years.
Born Sept. 19, 1922, in the town of Ellisburg, son of Elmer and Minnie Moore Claflin, he was educated in Mannsville schools.
He married Joyce Reed in 1959. A 1943 marriage to Jean A. Barrett ended in divorce.
Mr. Claflin served in the Army in the South Pacific during World War II, from 1942 to 1946.
He was a member of both Adams and Belleville volunteer fire departments for a total of 40 years, serving with the Fire Police for much of that time. He was a life member of South Jefferson Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5344 and Don Rounds American Legion Post 586, both in Adams. He enjoyed the outdoors and hunting.
Surviving besides his wife are a son and his wife, Tim and Kathy, Three Mile Bay; a daughter, Melissa Claflin, Watertown; a brother, Douglas, Adams; two grandsons, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Two brothers, William and Carl, and two sisters, Vera Denny and Ruth Glazier, died before him.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home. Spring burial will be in Woodside Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
