From FIRST 100 YEARS NOLAN COUNTY TEXAS (published 1985 by Nolan County Genealogical Society, permission granted)
FRED AND MYRTLE BROWN
J. D. Childers and Ellen Gardner Childers moved from Hylton to Bitter Creek in 1899. John Childers had herded sheep in northern Nolan and Fisher Counties and around Fort Phantom in Shackelford County.
J. D. Childers traded a team and wagon and money from the sale of the sheep for the farm on Bitter Creek belonging to John Fritz, son-in-law of John Montgomery.
The Childers girls remembered how thirsty they were when they reached Bitter Creek for they had heard of how "sweet" the water from around Sweetwater was, and how huge their disappointment was when they tasted the water, for it was "gypy".
Myrtle Childers married Fred M. Brown of Mulberry Canyon on February 21, 1909, just one day before her sixteenth birthday. The couple often rode horseback to see relatives in the "canyon". They lived on the Childers farm until they bought a small farm on the banks of Bitter Creek in the early 1930's. They farmed that land until they moved to Sweetwater in 1964. Fred Brown died in 1974 at the age of 86.
Mrs. Brown is still living in Sweetwater. She will be 92 on February 22nd. She is still active - living alone and taking care of her home and her lovely yard.
The Browns had two children, Elvin, born in 1911, and Earlene, who was born in 1925. Both live in Nolan County. Elvin and his wife Clara live in Sweetwater. Earlene and her husband Marshall live on the Seventy-Six Ranch southeast of Sweetwater.
