Columbia P. Childers, 85, of Ely died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at St. Marys Medical Center in Duluth.

She was born April 2, 1918, in Ely to Andrea and Ercelia Bianchi Parish. She was a 1938 graduate of Ely Memorial High School. After high school, Columbia was manager of the Ely Montgomery Ward store. In 1948 she married Fred C. Childers in Miller, S.D. They later moved to Ely, where they owned and published The Ely Miner. After Freds death in 1972, Columbia continued to operate the newspaper until she retired in 1982. She also was deputy registrar of motor vehicles in Ely for many years. Her favorite pastimes were having coffee at Hardees, reading and spending time at her lake home. She also enjoyed spending time with her many friends in Tower. She will be missed very much by her family and many friends.

Columbia is survived by her brothers, John Paris of Ely and Andrew (Mary Lou) Paris of Aurora; sisters, Charlotte Pechek of Ely and Natalie (James) DeGiusti of Minneapolis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred; sister, Mary Cecelia McDonald; sister-in-law, Mary Paris; and brother-in-law, Louis Pechek.
