Ben Chidlaw was born in Fresno, CA on Dec 19, 1932, the youngest son of Thomas and Carolyn Chidlaw. He grew up in Chowchilla and attended grammar school and high school there.

While attending Fresno State College, Ben at age 18 left school and joined the Navy during the Korean War in 1951. He spent 4 years on the carrier ship the Cape Esperance making the 36 trips across the Pacific to Japan and back. During this time Ben met and married Mary Nightengale of Livingston in 1953. Ben returned to college in 1955 and earned a degree in Criminology. During this time, Ben and Mary had their first 2 sons, Mark and Philip.

Ben's first job in 1959 was with the Merced County Probation Dept as a Probation officer, where the family made their home for 2 ½ years before making a move to Stockton to work for the State Dept of Corrections as a Parole Agent. Their third son, Bruce, was born in Stockton.

Wherever the family lived they enjoyed camping, boating, fishing and enjoying many friends.After 6 years, Ben was promoted and transferred to Redding to supervise the Redding Parole Office, covering the 13 northern California counties. Ben and the family enjoyed Northern California and never wanted to move again. That was 45 years ago!

They made many friends, enjoyed boating on Shasta Lake, camping, and fishing and becoming involved in the community and raising their three sons in Palo Cedro.

After Ben's early retirement he enjoyed just being a homebody with Mary after the boys went off to college and the Coast Guard and got married and gave him 4 grandchildren.

Ben endured Parkinson /dementia for 12 years and passed away on Sunday Sept 1, 2013 and leaves to mourn wife Mary, sons Mark, Philip and wife Jennifer, Bruce and wife Antoinette and grandchildren Roxane, Angel, Matilda, and Ben, and two brothers Bill and Ed and wives, and many nieces and nephews.
