Elsie Lee Chewning, age 91, died peacefully Friday, Nov. 6, 2009 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Front Royal, Va.

A long time resident of Spotsylvania, Elsie made her home in Bentonville, Va., for the past thirty years. She was preceded in death by a loving husband, William Lafayette Chewning; also, her parents, John and Mamie Garner Lee as well as a sister, Hazel Carneal.

Ms. Chewning is survived by two sons and a daughter; William Chewning of Surfside Beach, South Carolina, Ronald Chewning of Strasburg, Va. and Betty Nicewarner of Springfield, Va. She was the loving grandmother of Kimberly Chewning-McCarthy, Donna Thompson, Deborah Bendorf and Calib Chewning. She was also the proud great-grandmother of Tyler, Mackenzie and Paige Thompson; also Jacob, Zachary and Nicholas Bendorf. Ms. Chewning has one surviving sister, Myrtle Synan of Milford, Va.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p. m., Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009 at Johnson Funeral Home, Locust Grove, Va., with burial to follow at the Wilderness Baptist Church Cemetery, Spotsylvania, Va.

The family will receive friends on Monday, Nov. 9, 2009 from 6 p. m. until 8:00 p. m. at the funeral home.
