A funeral for Edwin Hasting Chewning, 75, of Spotsylvania County, owner of Gary's Jewelers on Caroline Street, will be held Friday at Johnson Funeral Home, Locust Grove. The reverend Rick Ritchie will officiate. Burial will be in Zoan Baptist Church cemetery in Spotsylvania County.

Mr. Chewning, who grew up on Hazel Grove Dairy Farm in the Chancellor area, died Tuesday, October 12, 1999, at Mary Washington Hospital.

Mr. Chewning was the subject of much public support when he lost bothe his legs in a sawmill accident in 1947.

A 1942 graduate of Spotsylvania High School,he was a World War II Army veteran,having served with the 9th Army during its drive against the Germans.

After his discharge, he worked for the federal government in Arlington and had been working at his father's sawmill for several months when the accident occurred. He also worked briefly at The National Bank of Fredericksburg.

After rehabilitation and six weeks of training in fabric re weaving and watchmaking through the State Vocational Rehabilitation Division, he ran a mending shop in Fredericksburg in the late 1940s, before going to work as a watchmaker.

He worked at a downtown jewelry store owned by James Flippo in the 1950s, then for Abe Scher at Gary's Jewelers at 817 Caroline Street. After running the business for a number of years, he bought Gary's Jewelers in 1971.

He was a member of Zoan Baptist Church and a lifetime member of Elks Lodge 875.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Sullivan Chewning; two sons, Edwin Michael Chewning of Huntsville, Alabama, and Jeffrey Lynn Chewning of Fredericksburg; three grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
