Sofia Chavez, 90, died Jan. 31, 2006, in Rio Chama where she resided with her daughter, Theresa Molina and husband Eumberto (Bert) and their sons, Esiquio and Bert Jr. She was born Dec. 9, 1915, in Heck Canyon, N.M., the daughter of Rubel and Eloisa Cordova.

She was a lifelong resident of Springer, a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Legion of Mary and the Altar Society until she moved to Española in 1996.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Julio Chavez Sr., son Julian “Moe” Chavez, daughter Mary Alice Chavez, brothers Donaciano (Chano) Cordova and Emilio Cordova, sisters Lucy Fernandez and Adelia Duran, grandsons Julio Chavez III, Antonio Bernal, Mark Sullivan and Francisco (Corky) Martinez, great granddaughter Patience Chavez and great grandson Adam Zamora.

Survivors include sons Benny Chavez (Cale) and wife Mary of Cimarron, Tommy Chavez of Portland, Ore., Albert Chavez and wife Frances, Julio Chavez Jr. and wife Angie, Joe Chavez and wife Louise, all of Springer, Gilbert Chavez and wife Patsy of Capitan and Ernie Chavez and wife Patty of Denver; daughters Margie Armijo and husband Joe, Stella Aguilar and companion Gil Duran of Springer, Patsy Henrie and husband Ballard, Theresa Molina and husband Embuerto, Lorraine Quintana and husband Charles, all of Española, Josephine Vigil and husband Tony of Raton; sister Phyllis Montoya of Albuquerque; granddaughter Julie Trujillo and husband Anthony of Springer; grandsons Esequio and Embuerto Jr. of Española, dauaghter-in-law Dorothy Chavez of Dumas, Texas, and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A wake service followed by a Rosary Devotional Service will be held Friday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Springer. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Feb. 4, at 10 a.m. at the same church with Rev. Father Daniel Balizan as the celebrant. Rite of committal and interment will follow at the Springer Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the St. Joseph’s Altar Society in Springer or the Amber Care in Española.

Funeral arrangements for Sofia Chavez are under the direction of the Alderette-Pomeroy Funeral Home.
