St. Joseph County
|Death: ||Feb. 8, 1910, USA|
Jeanette West was born in St. Joseph county, Indiana, March 19, 1840. She was the fourth of seven children of Robert Scott and Elizabeth West. Her parents natives of New Hampshire and Vermont respectively, moved westward in their early married life and were pioneers to the part of Indiana in which they settled. When the daughter was three years old she came with her parents to Kankakee county, where she has lived ever since with the exception of six years, four of which during the early part of their married life were spent in Bristol, Indiana, and two at Kentland in the same state.
She was the last survivor of her fatherís children. This farm on which her parents settled in 1843 has been her home most of her life.
She was married to Cyrus Legrand Chase January 13, 1861. To this union were born six children, two daughters and four sons. Her husband and three children, Elizabeth C. Culver, Matthew Robert and Emery F. survive her. The third son, Lanson C, died thirty years ago Feb 8th, the date of his motherís death. The fourth son, William A. died March 20, 1899, and the second daughter, Mrs. Ellis H Drake on the 21th of last August.
For years Mrs. Chase has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, the Womenís Relief Corps and the Womanís Christian Temperance Union. A life long follower of the lowly Nazarene she has done what she could to live the life He would have her live. Her great heart of love and noble self sacrifice for the good and comfort of others have led her to be one of the most faithful of His deciples. Her life was so pure, good, and noble of her deeds of love so widely distributed that all who knew her felt the blessing of her kindness and the uplift of association with her. A good word and a good will toward everybody were conspicuous among her many virtues. None knew her but to love her. Faithful to all her friends, a mother to the motherless, a devoted self sacrificing and loving wife, mother and sister. Not only to her children, but all her relatives and friends today rise and call her blessed.
