Ethel Mary Chapple, 87, of Grants Pass died Thursday, Sept. 21, 1995, at Merlin Care Center.
Private cremation services were held with Hull & Hull Funeral Directors in charge of arrangements.
She was born Oct. 7, 1907, in Nottingham, England. She was proud of her English heritage and was the granddaughter of Sir Allan Hunt, who is listed in the English Dictionary.
An athletic champion swimmer, she swam the English Channel in 1927 from England to France, won several medals and received many honors in swimming. She was a professional tailor and also knitted sweaters professionally for 30 years. She moved to Grants Pass in 1978 from Thousand Oaks, Calif.
She belonged to the National Rifle Assocation. She enjoyed playing the piano, especially classical music, hunting, fishing and stargazing. She was fond of the ocean, mountains and horses.
Survivors include a sister, Connie Helliwell of Toronto, Ontario, and other family members in Canada, and a granddaughter, Rosalind De Valk of Bakersfield, Calif.
