Capt. A.O. Chandler, veteran master river pilot, died at 4:45 yesterday morning at the U.S. Marine Hospital. He was 53 and lived at 505 Eva. Services will be held at the National Funeral Home at 10 tomorrow morning with the Rev. W.M. O'Donnell, American Legion chaplain, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park. Captain Chandler knew every twist of the Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee rivers. Born at Columbus City, Ala., on the Tennessee, he watched the packet boats ply the water and longed to become a licensed pilot as he worked on his father's farm. After serving in France with the infantry in World War I, Captain Chandler returned home and obtained a clerk's job on a Tennessee River packet boat. Then he became a cub pilot and finally a licensed pilot and master. Captain Chandler had been a resident of Memphis since 1927. He came to the Mississippi River as a pilot with the Federal Barge Lines and later was captain and pilot for the United States Engineers. For the past 10 years he had been pilot and master of the steamer Louisiana for the Mississippi Valley Barge Lines. When Wilson Dam on the Tennessee River was built at Florence, Ala., he spent a year there working as a pilot. Captain Chandler was a close friend of another distinguished Memphis river pilot, Capt. J. Harvey Brown, who died April 3. They enjoyed getting together and reminiscing about their experiences on the river. Ill since April 22, 1945, Captain Chandler entered the hospital the last time March 12. Captain Chandler was a member of the American Legion Memphis Post No. 1, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Lieut. Guion Armstrong Post, and The Masters, Mates & Pilots Association Harbor No. 25. He was a Methodist. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Eunice Bivena Chandler; two children, Lewis O. and Glynndolyn Chandler, all of Memphis; his mother, Mrs. Alice Stroud Chandler of Columbus City, Ala.; a sisters, Mrs. William Walls of Columbus City; eight brothers, O.A. and Wiley Chandler of Huntsville, Ala., Hunter Chandler of Stevenson, Ala., Harold and Bernard Chandler of Guntersville, Ala., Capt. Elbin Chandler of the United States Army, Carter Chandler of Montgomery, Ala., and Willie Chandler of Paint Rock, Ala., and two grandchildren, Lew and Lee Chandler of Memphis.
