SAN ANGELO - Our father, Gilbert G. Chabarria Sr. (Chino), went home Sunday, Nov 9, 2014, at the age of 79. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, Pedro and Luisa Chavarria; his son, Richard; and a very special grandson, Steve Gutierrez Jr. Gilbert was born Feb. 5, 1935, to Ysabel and Delfina Guerrero Chavarria in San Angelo, Texas.
In November of 1951, he married the love of his life, Victoria Arellano and together they had eight sons and five daughters: the late Richard Chabarria Sr., Gilbert Chabarria Jr., Guadalupe Gutierrez, Jesse Chabarria and wife Lisa, Betty Martinez and husband Armando, Ysabel (JD) Chabarria, Diana Garcia and husband Luis, Norma Chabarria, Adam Chabarria and wife Bonnie, Gabriel Chabarria and Melissa Romo and husband J.R.
Gilbert grew up here in San Angelo and attended St. Mary's Catholic School till the fifth grade, but having a fifth grade education did not stop him. He accomplished everything and anything he put his mind to. He went on to do many things, till he found his love for painting. He began his lifelong career working for Bill Bronsy Painting. He later began his own painting business and succeeded. He was proud that he was able to pass on this love of painting to his children and teach his sons what he knew. He was definitely one of a kind. He never met a stranger nor had an enemy. He was a devoted Christian and had a strong faith in the Lord. He attended church every Sunday and Wednesday faithfully. He loved helping the church every chance he could. He had a love for many things as well. His hobbies included spending the afternoon barbecuing at home, listening to his music, especially Willie Alvarado. He loved going to Las Vegas or Eagle Pass for his chance to win his retirement money. He was a very positive person and always looked on the brighter side of things. He was always going out of his way for anyone that needed help. He was truly a blessing.
In addition to his wife, Victoria and his children, he is survived by his sister, Antonia Chavarria Carbajal and husband Gilbert. He is also survived by many, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will include Lance Chabarria, Robert Gutierrez, Fred Reyes, Armando Martinez Jr., Jason Chavarria and Gabriel Chabarria.
