During World War II, Ignacio was serving with the 2nd Quartermaster Corps in the Philippines when Imperial Japanese began their invasion on 8 Dec 1941. He became a POW and endured deplorable conditions. He was on the "Hell Ship" Arisan Maru when it was torpedoed by the American submarine USS Shark. Hell ships were unmarked as POW carriers to act as decoys. POWs not killed by the torpedo were executed by their guards or left to drown. Ignacio's brother Filimon was also a POW in the Philippines.
