Jay Chapel obituary:
Evelyn B. Brewster
May 29, 1919 - November 19, 2011
John 14: 1-6
Evelyn B. Caruthers was born May 29, 1919 to John and Josephine Caruthers in Brenham, Texas. Evelyn was the 8th child of 10 children all deceased.
Evelyn was converted to Christ at an early age and united with the Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church of Houston, Texas. Evelyn attended elementary and Phyllis Wheatley High School in Houston, Texas. Evelyn met and married Mr. Willie C. Brewster January 16, 1934 in Houston, Texas. To this union one child was born, Betty J. Brewster Nervis on April 20, 1950.
She and her husband relocated to Oakland, California in 1945. She united with Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. James Owens, Pastor. She later united with the Center Street Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. John W. Nervis in 1988. She later united with the Bethlehem Institutional Baptist Church in April 1994 under the leadership of Rev. Dr. John W. Nervis and remained a faithful member until her health began to fail. She loved her church family and felt like some members were her own children, such as Rev. Dr. & Sis. Anthony Braxton and his brother Larry and wife Juanita Braxton. This family truly brightened her day, and her Eggnog brightened their day.
Evelyn was a housewife for many years until her husband died August 19, 1966. Afterward, she was employed by the United Postal Service in 1970 until her retirement in November 30, 1990. Evelyn truly enjoyed her 20 years employment with the Postal Service. She loved cooking from scratch, such as biscuits, bread pudding, banana pudding, and sweet potato pies, smothered pork chops, and specialized in southern cool-aid.
