Laverne Carthel, age 95, of Lockney, passed away, Wednesday, September 7, 2016 in the Lockney Care Center at the age of 95 years. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 10, 2016 at the West College and Third Church of Christ in Lockney. Interment to follow at the Lockney Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8pm, Friday, September 9, 2016. Arrangements are under the personal care of Moore-Rose Funeral Home in Lockney.

Weldon Lavirn Carthel was born December 24, 1920 in the Prairie Chapel Community of Lockney, Texas in the home of his parents William Author and Lillie Annabelle-Steele Carthel.

He graduated from Lockney High School in 1940 and was a member of the Prairie Chapel Church of Christ and later The Westside Church of Christ in Lockney known as The West College & Third Church of Christ.

He married Elizabeth Clementine Clark on 11 July, 1942, in Portales, New Mexico. They lived in Floydada until he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Elizabeth Clementine in January, 2013; eight siblings and one great-great-grandson.

He is survived by his three daughters; Pricilla Minter and Debra McCarty of Lockney, Sue Barnes of Olton and a son, Wayland Carthel of Okinawa, Japan;
ten grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

He and his wife, Elizabeth Clementine settled in the Prairie Chapel Community to farm after his discharge from the Military in December, 1945. A daughter, Pricilla, was born on 8 October, 1944 while he served in the Army air Corps.
A son, Wayland, was born on 7 May, 1948 after his discharge from the Military. A daughter, Sue, was born on 9 April 1950 followed by Debra on 3 April 1951. W. L. farmed until December 1959 when he and the family moved into Lockney and he worked in Floydada for awhile then began work with the City of Lockney. He worked for 23 years as the Water Superintendent, retiring in 1987.

W. L. (or "Red" as he was called) loved the Lockney Community, the State of Texas, the United States of America and last but not least-the Lockney Longhorns and the Texas Longhorns! Loved watching all sports.
He loved to help people and loved his family; being a wonderful dad, granddad, great granddad and great-great-granddad was very important to him. He spent numerous hours working in his back yard and in his beloved "Wood Shop" making something for his family or friends. He will be remembered by his family and friends for his love and generosity and for his love of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Family has suggested that Memorial contributions benefit: Lockney Senior Citizens Center, West College and Third Church of Christ and Lockney Cemetery Association. Addresses are available upon request.
