Althea Velma Carter Burks, 82, passed peacefully March 5, 2012, in Bangor, with her family at her side. Althea was born Oct. 24, 1929, in Brewer, the daughter of Vasco E. Carter and Madelene Wyman (Burrill) Carter of West Ellsworth.

She graduated Ellsworth High School in 1947 and in 1948 married Hubert J. Burks Jr. of Richmond, Va., and traveled the world for over 26 years as a proud Navy wife. They were married for over 63 years. Althea was a founding member of St. Andrew Lutheran in Ellsworth and a STAR patient at the Eastern Maine Dialysis Unit in Ellsworth for eight and a half years.

She is survived by her husband; four children who were the joy of her life, James V. Burks, Madelene R. Burks Gowie, David E. Burks and Elizabeth A. Burks; sister, Nancy Shaw Carter; 25 grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many cousins.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Althea's memory to the Eastern Maine Dialysis Unit, 11 Short St., Ellsworth, ME 04605 or St. Andrew Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 145, Ellsworth, ME 04605. Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.
