Norma was born June 12, 1931 in Mobridge, South Dakota to Michael Leo and Mildred Carrigan. Norma died March 22, 2016 in Tacoma, Washington.
She grew up as a baker’s daughter in Minnesota and North Dakota. She was the fourth child of five children. On September 13, 1952 Norma married the love of her life, Charles Cresien. Together they raised five children. As a mother, Norma would sew all night creating elaborate dresses for her daughters. In 1968 their family moved to Washington. Eventually Norma became grandma to eleven grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren and two great-great children. When her grandchildren were young Norma worked for the Federal Way Schools. However, her primary focus was on her children and grandchildren.
She and her husband would travel all over Tacoma, to Bellingham and to Portland to support their grandchildren in their activities. She was known to stock her kitchen full of cinnamon rolls, fudge, sandwich making supplies, and other treats. She worked for days on her preparations for holidays and her Christmas baking. Everyone knew you’d “never go hungry at Grandma’s!”
Norma was the beloved aunt, “adopted grandma”, and cherished friend. Her Catholic faith was an important part of her identity. She and her husband volunteered for many years at the church’s foodbank.
Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie, her oldest daughter Patty Burpee, and her two sisters and two brothers.
Rosary was recited at 7pm on Wednesday March 30 at Visitation Catholic Church. Funeral Mass was celebrated at Visitation Catholic Church.
If desired memorial contributions can be made to Diabetes Association or your local food bank.
