Amelia (aka Emilia) immigrated with her parents from the German settlement of Odessa, Russia in Dec 1907, when she was just 9 mos old. Her parents would have an additional 12 children after their arrival in New York City.

Amelia married Sebastian Joseph Mastel, also an immigrant from Russia, on April 12, 1928, in Yakima, Washington. They would have 2 daughters, Violet Mae in 1930, and Betty Jean in 1932. Amelia & Joseph separated in mid-1940. Amelia then fell in love with Earl Martin Carr and he helped her raise both Violet & Betty Jean. Both girls would use his last name and when Betty Jean passed away in July 1941, she was buried as Earl’s daughter, i.e. Betty Jean Carr.

Amelia & Earl had a son in May 1947 (Andrew Earl Carr) and they were able to finally get married on June 6, 1952, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. It appears they were unable to legally marry prior to 1952 due legal issues with Amelia’s 1st husband Sebastian.

Amelia became a naturalized American citizen on November 21, 1957, in Spokane, Washington.
