Cora was born in Spencer County, Indiana, to Joseph Benedict and Ordella (Della) Adams. She had a younger sister, Mabel. Joseph and Della were married in 1889 in Spencer County. The family of four can be found in the 1900 U.S. Census, Spencer, Indiana. Joseph and Della likely divorced, as by 1910 Joseph is living with his 2nd wife Rosa, and daughters Cora and Mabel, of his first marriage, in Louisville, Kentucky. Joseph and Rosa married March 26, 1907, in Louisville, Kentucky.

Ordella (Della), Cora's mother married three times during her lifetime. After her separation/divorced from Joseph Benedict, she married William G Matthews about 1905 in Indiana, in either Gibson or Vanderburgh county. Then after William died in 1931, she married Conrad Schuble, her next door neighbor, on March 11, 1933, in Evansville, Indiana.

Ordella came from a large Adams family that migrated to Warrick County, Indiana, from Daviess County, Kentucky, in the 1860s. Her father was John Quincy Adams and her mother Catherine Baker.
