Virgil D. Carothers, 86, a resident of St. Anthony's Continuing Care Center, Rock Island, formerly of Milan, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011 at the center.

Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. on Monday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan. Burial is at the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 299. Visitation is 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities.

Virgil was born on November 15, 1924 in Rock Island, a son of Samuel and Anna Vetter Carothers. He married Shirley M. Marx on June 7, 1947 in Milan. She died December 2, 1999.

Mr. Carothers was a teamster who drove professionally for many trucking firms including, J. I. Case, Roadway and many other companies. He retired in 1988.

He was a WW II veteran, serving as a flight engineer on B-24's over Europe. Virgil was a proud participant of the Honor Flight program and went to Washington D.C. in October 2009. He was a member of the Milan American Legion Post 569, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 299 and the Rock Island V.F.W. Post 1303. He was a former member of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, Coal Valley.

Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Susan Carothers, Rock Island, David Carothers, Melbourne, AK, and Tim and Traci Carothers, Sherrard; grandchildren, Sara Rask, Victoria, Ill., Cam Carothers, Coyne Center, Tanner Carothers and Ty Carothers, both of Sherrard; great grandchildren, Warren, Sam, and Connor Carothers, and Nick and Adam Kertz; and his sister, Frances Sleezer, Chicago. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley; and brothers, Bernard "Barney", Ellsworth "Al" and Clifford Carothers.
