Mayo, Josephine C., age 91 of Knoxville, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 6, 2013. She was a graduate of Salem Academy and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Josephine was a member of Second Presbyterian Church for over sixty-five years, where she taught Bible Study Fellowship and Sunday School. She was an accomplished artist and showed in a number of art shows and in art galleries. She became interested in art in her mid-thirties and started her art career by doing children's portraits. Later on, she most enjoyed painting mountains and beach scenes. For a number of years she taught art classes at the church where she made many friends. Josephine was a sweet and loving person. The Lord and her family was always at the center of her life. She is survived by her loving husband of seventy-one years, Claxton Mayo. He is of the third generations of family working at D. R. Mayo Seed Company and later the Mayo Garden Centers. She is also survived by her children, Claxton Mayo, Jr. and wife Wallace, Cissy Mayo and Steve Mayo and wife Debra; grandchildren, Bryan Mayo and wife Ronda, Elizabeth Cox and husband Thad, Lisa Green Kern of Miami, FL, Laura Green, Michael Schaffer and wife Danielle, Kelli Kalies, Amanda Mayo and Taylor Mayo; great-grandchildren, Blake and Bethany Mayo, Matt and Chris Cox, Sarah and Jimmy Kern, Carter Green, Braxton Clark, Jon and Grant Schaffer, Kelsey Philips, Kaylee Hazelwood and Mary Faith; special friends, Jane and Kathy Kennedy and Terry Chumley. Family and friends will meet at the main entrance to Highland Memorial Cemetery 11:00 AM Saturday for a graveside service. A celebration of Josephine's life will be held 1:00 PM Saturday at Second Presbyterian Church with Dr. Bryan Wilson officiating with the family receiving friends following the service in the fellowship hall. The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Second Presbyterian Church, 2829 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919. Online condolences may be sent to www.rosemortuary.com.
