W. A. Carlton, Referee in Bankruptcy, Dies
From Monday's Daily [April 2, 1928] -
William Alfred Carlton, aged 74 years, referee in bankruptcy here since February 29, 1924, died suddenly at his home here last night at 8 o'clock. He had just recently qualified for another term in his office.
Deceased was born near Parthenon, Newton county, January 25, 1854. He went to Texas when a young man and stayed for four years. On returning, he attended school at Clark Academy at Berryville, then went to law school at Iowa City, Iowa, graduating in 1883. With several young men of Berryville, he went to New Mexico, where he taught school and practiced law for three years. Returning to Arkansas in 1886, he located in Newton county and continued practicing law and teaching. In 1887 he married Miss Obedience Marrs. To this union two children were born, Mrs. A. E. Davis of Harrison and Mrs. Willie Gladden of Western Grove. He spent several years in Oklahoma and was county judge of Dewey county for three terms. He has been a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal church for 35 years.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon at the Central Avenue Methodist church. Rev. Roy Brown, pastor, will conduct the services. Burial will be made in Rose Hill cemetery.
William Alfred Carlton married Obedience Eliza "Biddie" Marrs on January 23, 1887.
