OBITUARY: NORMA JEAN CARLSON BEERS
7/22/1928 - 6/20/2015

Noma Jean Beers was called home by the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 20, 2015 in Pasco WA. She died of natural causes.

Noma was born in Estherville Iowa. She was the sixth and last child born to Brynjolf and Wilhelmina Petersen Carlson. Her siblings were Elvin, Howard, Warren, Velma Surber and Louise Trogden. Louise is the only family member surviving Noma.

Noma's mother died when she was nine months old. She was raised by her maternal grandparents, Andrew and Johanna Petersen of Newell, Iowa. Noma joined her father in San Diego, California in 1942 where he had gone to take advantage of the booming economy of WWII. Noma was 14 years old at the time. Her father died in 1980.

Noma attended Herbert Hoover High School in San Diego. After graduation, she was accepted into the nursing program at Mercy College of Nursing. She became a Registered Nurse in 1950. Noma continued to work at Mercy Hospital until she moved to Los Angeles.

During the Korean War she worked for the American Red Cross Blood Bank. Noma traveled throughout Los Angeles County area on blood drives sponsored by companies, churches, movie studios, prisons and military bases. Later in life, Noma returned to volunteer for the Red Cross in Tri-Cities, WA. and worked as a private nurse for many years.

On June 16, 1951, Noma joined Darrell D. Beers in the vows of marriage in a Methodist Church in Santa Monica, California. This union soon transformed into a family with the birth of three daughters, Darloma (Milner), Debra and Doreen (Michel). Their grandchildren are Rachel and Aaron Milner, Nathan, Desiree, Sophie and Hannah Michel. Great-grandchildren include Ashlyn, Alexace, Matthew and Tristan Milner as well as Andrew and Victoria Michel.

Darrell and Noma enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Alaska. They also went on tours to Scandinavia, Spain, Portugal and to celebrate their 50th anniversary they cruised up the Rhine River from Amsterdam to Switzerland. They were married a total of 56 years. Darrell died in 2006 of cancer.

Noma was an active member of the Pasco First Christian Church. She especially enjoyed the Wednesday afternoon Care Group and Bible Study. For many years she distributed library materials to residencies at Hillcrest Nursing Home. After Darrell's passing, she formed a group to sing hymns at retirement centers and nursing homes in the Tri-Cities area. Noma also served on the Franklin Co. Election Board. She was one of the founding members of the Tuesday Club that met for over 40 years.

Noma Jean Carlson was clearly an outside person. She preferred rural to urban. It was there, close to the earth, that God became more meaningful to her. She enjoyed gardening, flower arranging and reading. She was thankful for her family, friends, her church and may God bless them.

Memorial services will be on Saturday, June 27 at 10:30 a.m at the Pasco First Christian Church, 1524 W. Marie St, Pasco WA.
