Virginia M. Carlson, 96, of Seward and formerly of Kearney died Sunday, April 8, 2012 at the Green House Assisted Living in Seward, NE. Virginia was born March 28, 1916 in Grand Island, NE to William and Bessie (Ellis) Kelly.
Virginia grew up in Alda and graduated from Alda High School in 1933. She attended college at Central City NE in 1934-1935 then taught rural school at Abbott, NE then taught at district 54 for 2 years. She later attended school in Lincoln, Boulder CO and Greeley, CO.
On June 9, 1940 she married Kenneth Carlson in Alda, NE. They moved to Kearney in 1941.
Virginia was manager of the College Book Store and Market in Kearney, NE. for 17 years until retiring.
Virginia was a member of First Lutheran Church in Kearney, PEO chapter AS. She also belonged to a sewing club from 1942-1998, and was a charter member of Kearney Geneological Society and belonged to the University of Nebraska at Kearney Faculty Club. She did volunteer work at the Good Samaritan Hospital and the Frank House and enjoyed her family, knitting, coffee parties, writing letters and was interested in genealogy.
Survivors are: sons Richard and wife Linda Carlson of Grand Island, NE, James and wife Mary Carlson of Utica, NE; grandchildren; Angela Samway, Gina Dubs, Amber Snell and husband, Mike, Tricia Hakonson and husband, John, Jana Harens and husband, Weston and Trent Carlson; 15 great grandchildren.
Virginia was preceded in death by: husband, Kenneth Carlson in 2006.
Graveside service was at the Alda Cemetery, Alda, NE.
