Charley emigrated to America in the 1890s and became a U.S. citizen on January 11, 1909. At first he worked on farms in North Dakota. He ran locomotives out of the mines to the stock piles in Proctor, Minnesota. He was hired in 1895 by the D. M. & N. Railroad and promoted to engineer on April 29, 1903. When he retired in 1935, at age 65, he had 40 years of seniority. Charley died from stomach cancer and was buried on his 77th birthday July 21, 1947.
