In the soft twilight of a Sabboth evening after tending to the kitchen fire and preparing the evening meal with her own hands, Grandma Bloom went to lay on her bed at 8:30 she sweetly and peacefully passed into her eternal rest after rounding out a life's journey embracing 86 years and 5 days. It happened last Sunday evening. Indeed not all are granted such a peaceful passing as this, so free from suffering and pain and yet no doubt blissfully welcome to one who had such a beautiful and aiding faith in her Master as this good woman. We are told by those who were nearest and dearest to her that she had gone on through her long life in toe even tenor of her way, an ever willing and tender mother, genial and compassionate among her friends, kind and sacrificing traits it seems, which easily overshadow her little faults. She was a regular attendant in church and at the various little society meetings and in spite of her advanced age, she was able until very recently to make trips to the city and between the tri-village centers. She was blessed with remarkably strong and vigorous health and was not known to have been sick a day in all her life, and really it would seem such people are almost to be envied.
The secret of success of Elin Bloom's life was that it was simple, full of devotion to duty and a beautiful adherence to the faith of her master. In spite of their simplicity how difficult it is for a modern world to fully grasp and appreciate to intrinsic worth of such characters, although they have accomplished little of any particular historic interest.
It is the honesty and simplicity of character in such careers that urges us to impress it as a memory to those of younger years and more presuming requisitions on life.
Elin Bloom was born in Kronobergs Lan, Sweden, March 14, 1829 and immigrated to this country 37 years ago. A year after her arrival to this colony she married Gustaf Bloom who died 17 years ago last fall. When she first settled here, she made her home with her brother Nicholas Carlson of Center City. During the last twenty years she has made her home with Edward Bloom and died at his home on Russell Beach.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. J P Vanstrom of Minneapolis and six stepsons and two step daughters, Charles Bloom of Franconia, Alfred and August Bloom of Chisago City, David Bloom of Center City, Frank Bloom of Lindstrom, Edward Bloom of Russell Beach and Joseph Bloom of Warroad, Minn, Mrs. A C Rose and Mrs. Chas Strand of Marine, Minn and a large number of relatives.
The funeral was held this afternoon at 2:30 pm from the Chapel at Center City and the remains were interred in Center City Cemetery where they were escorted by a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends. Peace to her memory.
