GALLUP — Services for Andrew "Andy" Carabajal, 62, will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 17, at the Sacred Heart Cathedral. The Rev. Matthew Keller will officiate. Burial will be Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. A rosary will be recited 7 p.m.,tonight, Sept. 16, at the Sacred Heart Cathedral.
Carabajal died Sept. 11, 2008, in Gallup. He was born Nov. 11, 1945, in Gallup.
Carabajal graduated from Gallup High School in 1964, and was employed with the Pepsi Cola Company during his high school years. He attended Denver Drafting School. In 1965, he enlisted in the Air Force. After the Vietnam War he returned to Gallup. Carabajal worked for the USPS, was a certified EMT Instructor and was employed with the Gallup Fire Department and retired as Fire Marshal. He then returned to work for the City of Gallup as a Code Compliance Inspector. Carabajal was a member of the Gallup Lions Club, V.F.W., Knights of Columbus, Board Member for the Gallup Community Service Center, Board Member for the NM Mid West Cap, Red Rock Chapter of A.B.A.T.E., Sundace Iron Riders and a past member of the BPOE Elks Lodge #1440. He was an avid umpire for all Gallup Baseball Leagues, and enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, ballooning for the Extreme Lee Chase Crew and Old Timers Baseball. Carabajal's favorite past time was being Santa Claus for over 30 years making many little kids believe Santa Claus was real.
Survivors include his sons, Ryan Carabajal of Albuquerque, Denie Ray Kiger of Mississippi, KC Carabajal of Gallup; daughters, Holly Carabajal of Albuquerque, Keia Carabajal of Gallup; brother's, Freddie Carabajal, John Carabajal, Tommy Gonzales, Michael Molina, all of Gallup; sisters, Christine Carabajal, Sara Steadman of Gallup, Mary Ann Carabajal of Scottsdale; five grandchildren.
Carabajal was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Pauline Carabajal; daughter, Christy Ann Carabajal; brother, Edward Cabrera.
Pallbearers will be Tom Trujillo, Dan Diaz, Fred Castillo, Ephren Landavazo, Bill Martinez, Michael Lovato, Gene Pacheco, Kenny Carabajal Sr.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Knights of Columbus Hall immediately following rosary and the church services.
