Ret. Sgt. Maj. Connard Capps, 83, of Meridian, died Thursday, November 19, 2009 at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian.

He was born and reared in the Zama Community of Attala County and had made his home in Meridian for the past several years.
Ret. Sgt. Maj Capps served in the U.S. Army for 24 years during World
War II, Korea, and Vietnam, receiving two purple hearts. He was a member of Apostolic Pentecostal Church in DeKalb and served as a lay minister.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 56 years, Amy Todd Capps and son, David Earl Capps.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Talley Capps of Meridian; son, Charles Lamar Capps and wife, Illine of Collinsville; step-daughters, Jennie Payne of Laurel and Happi Coco of Florence; stepsons, Ricky Thomas of Ashford, South Carolina, and Jeff Thomas of Pearl; 10 step grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; sister, Jean Caperton of Pearl; and brother, Donald Capps of Hurley.
