Jesse Cantor Dies; Was Judge and DA

Judge Jesse E. Cantor, 74, of 108 Bradford Parkway, died yesterday at Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital's east unit after a short illness. A native of Rochester, he was a Syracuse resident 60 years. He served in World War I as an interpreter for the Syracuse Medical College Hospital Unit β€” later known as the Dr. Van Duyn Unit. He served in World War II as a lieutenant colonel in the vlitary government, serving in North Africa and Italy. As an expression of appreciation, the Italian people made him an honorary citizen of the city of Torre Del Greco in the Province of Naples. Upon his return he was elected Onondaga County district attorney, later serving as Municipal Court judge until his retirement in 1965. He was a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Syracuse University in 1915 with a liberal arts degree. He taught Romance languages at Syracuse University in 1915 and 1916. After several years in business, he entered the Syracuse University College of Law where he graduated cum laude in 1928 and was president of his class. He served as a lecturer on criminal law at the College of Law in 1946 and 1947. He was a member of the National Sojourners, and American Legion Post 41. He was a past state Chef de Guerre of the 40 & 8. He was a member of Onondaga Post 131, Jewish War Veterans. He was a member of the Zionist Organization of America and Philo Lodge 968, F&AM. He was member of the Scottish Rite and the Tigris Shrine. He was a member of the Syracuse Liederkranz Club and the county and state Bar Associations. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Molly Cantor; a son, Gordon Cantor of Iowa City, Iowa; a daughter, Mrs. Benjamin Levy; three brothers, Sidney Cantor of Brooklyn, Harry Cantor of Ventnor, N.J., and Abraham Cantor of Los Angeles, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Lillian Shulman of Ventnor, N.J., and six grandchildren. Private services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Birnbaum Funeral Chapel, 1909 E. Fayette St., Rabbi Theodore Levy officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Contributions may be made to the Jewish Home of Central New York.
