ALTAMONT — Richard D. Cannon, 62, of Altamont left his earthly home at 1:31 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2012, at home, with his family near.

Richard Dale Cannon was born July 17, 1949, at home in Clay City, into the family of Bill and June Mitchell-Cannon. Richard was the third child of five siblings born into the family. Hard work and strong ideals were part of his family life. Richard received his grade and high school education in Flora.

He married Caroline Elizabeth Gaines on March 26, 1974, in Flora. He was a member of First Baptist Church, VFW Post 7676 and American Legion Post 512, all of Altamont. Mr. Cannon honored his nation's call for service and was inducted in the U.S. Army on April 22, 1969, and served his country honorably with two enlistments, receiving an honorable discharge on May 29, 1979.

He received two overseas bars during the Vietnam War service, both in infantry and armor reconnaissance. Upon moving to Altamont in 1992, Richard was gainfully employed by A & H Implement Co., where he attended, greeted and cared for their customers daily, until his illness caused his early retirement in February 2012.

He is survived by his wife, Caroline E. Cannon; two daughters, Teresa and Mary Cannon; six grandchildren, Tyler Hurst, Devin Durbin and Kaitlyn Hurst, Tray and Kain Christianson and Matthew Graham; two brothers, Wesley and Steve Cannon; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William "Bill" Cannon and Alice June Mitchell-Cannon; brother, Dennis Cannon; sister, Linda Ainley; grandson, Anthony Joe Graham Jr. at 3 years of age; and granddaughter, Annaleida June Hurst at 3 months of age.

Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church, Altamont, with the Rev. Richard Mulvaney officiating.
