Franklin News-Herald, Friday, Sep 8 1939:
James Thompson Campbell Jr., 58, died at his home, 1526 Buffalo Street, at 8 am today from spinal meningitis he'd had about a week. He was born in Franklin Oct. 29, 1880, son of James Thompson Campbell Sr., who died Feb. 16, 1931, and Mrs. Martha Stillman Campbell.

While the nature of the illness was such that little hope was held for recovery the past two days, his death was a great shock to Franklin, where he was highly respected and admired as a businessman and citizen. He always lived in Franklin, attended Franklin public schools, and prepared for college at Kiskiminetas Springs School. He graduated from Princeton University in 1903 and became associated with his father in the J. T. Campbell and Sons department store. Following his father's death, he took over management of the store, one of Franklin/s largest mercantile establishments. He was a devoted member of St. John's Episcopal Church, a member of the Vestry there, and gave much of his time to church affairs. He was of unassuming and serious nature, and conducted his store in a quiet and businesslike manner. He was deeply devoted to his friends, and was regarded everywhere as a good citizen. His judgment in business matters was sound and carried weight with his associates and other merchants in the city.

On April 28. 1909 he married Miss Marion Paige Mackey, daughter of Charles W. Mackey, and she survives, with a daughter, Mrs. Thomas Algeo Brown of Pittsburgh; two grandchildren, Marion Mackey Brown and Thomas Campbell Brown; his mother; and a sister, Miss Elizabeth Campbell of Franklin.

Services will be at his home at 4 pm Saturday with Rev. W. Robert Webb, rector of St. John's, officiating. Interment will be in Franklin Cemetery. Because of the nature of the disease that caused his death, services will be strictly private.
