Birth: May 14, 1927
Death: Mar. 8, 2007

James R. Campbell passed away peacefully at South West Washington Medical Center Thursday, March 8, 2007 after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. He was born May 14, 1927 to Carl and Ada Campbell in Spokane, WA. Jim arrived in Woodland in 1977 and assumed the position of Manager of the Old National Bank (now the U.S. National Bank.) He married Margaret Pengra on September 2, 1979. Jim retired in 1992 after 43 years in the banking industry. He managed banks in Twisp, Rosalia and Reardan before his move to Woodland. Jim's commitment and personal standards throughout the years to the community of Woodland are not only those of a prominent business member but also as an individual whose volunteer hours, input and project direction have become cornerstones in community service. As a result he was honored as Woodland's 2005 Citizen of the Year. In 1977 Jim served as president of the Woodland Chamber of Commerce and continued to serve on or chair several Chamber committees. Because of his inspiration and motivation the annual Woodland Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament fund raiser was instituted. He was widely known throughout the state for his commitment to this popular fundraiser. Jim's commitment to Woodland was evidenced by his over 20 years of service on city commissions. He served on the former Board of Adjustment but spent most of his volunteer hours and years on the Civil Service Commission. He was honored by the city for his service on the commission where he served as both chairperson and Commissioner. When asked how long Jim served local citizens on commissions, a city hall employee quickly replied "Forever!" Additionally, Jim was recently elected to and served three and a half years on Cowlitz County Cemetery District #2. Jim also served on the Board of Directors on Surf Side Inn in Ocean Park, WA. In retirement Jim served as a resource to any and all that approached with questions about the business community, the Chamber and the city of Woodland. He was known as the "go to" person with the chamber and other organizations because anything he agreed to do would be done well. He has been an active member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles since the 1940's and played trumpet in the Eagles State Band. Diagnosed with cancer in 2001, Jim inspired family and friends with his strength, determination and upbeat sense of humor. He and Margaret were active members of the Ridgefield Nazarene Church. Jim is survived by his three daughters, Geri Campbell and friend Diane Ducatte, Molly Keene and husband Terry and Barbara Parlet and husband Larry; two grandchildren, ToniRae Coolbaugh and husband Jason Sr. and Scott Campbell; three great-grandchildren, Alexys, Camielle and Jason Jr.; two stepsons, Rob Pengra and wife Lori and Randy Pengra and wife Carrie; stepdaughter-in-law, Sue Pengra; and nine grandchildren. Funeral will take place at the Ridgefield Nazarene Church on March 17 at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at Evergreen Memorial in Vancouver, WA. Memorials may be made to Vancouver Cancer Center, 210 SE 136th Avenue, Vancouver, WA 98684.
