Chief Donald S. Campbell, 74, of Garden Lane, Hope, died unexpectedly on Monday, October 6, 2014 at Kent Hospital in Warwick. He was the beloved husband of Sandra (Hargraves) Campbell. Mr. and Mrs. Campbell would have celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on October 12.

Born in Providence, the son of the late Andrew and Agnes (Tainsh) Campbell, he was raised in Bristol and he served in the United States Army.

For over 40 years Don worked in pharmaceutical sales for several companies retiring from Astra-Zeneca in 2004 as a District Manager.

He was a life member of the Hope & Jackson Fire Company in the Town of Scituate, RI, joining the department in August of 1967. Previously and starting at the age of 14, he served with the fire departments in the Towns of Bristol and Warren.

During his tenure with the department he served in multiple roles including President of the Company. Don rose through the ranks serving in every line officer position finally becoming Chief of the Department in 1990, a position he held for 21 of the last 24 years. He has served in many fire service organizations in the state including two terms as President of the Rhode Island Fire Chiefs Association. He also was a past president of the Scituate Fire/Ambulance Engineering Board and of Hope Community Services.

In recognition of his devotion to his community, Don was named Citizen of the Year at the Scituate Old Home Day in 1998. In 2011 he was recognized by the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation at that year's "Celebrate Volunteerism" event on the playing field at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA. Don was a Mason and a 50 year member of St. Alban's Lodge in Bristol.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Heather McNamara & her husband Tim and Heidi Campbell, and his two grandsons Tyler and Jacob McNamara all of Hope and one sister: Jean Medlock of Illinois. He was the father of the late Holly Campbell and brother of the late Robert Campbell.

His funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 11:00 am at Shepherd of the Valley United Methodist Church, 604 Seven Mile Road, Scituate. Burial will be in North Burial Ground, Bristol.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations made to Hope-Jackson Fire Company, P.O. Box 201, Hope, RI 02831.
