Alexander Campbell, 92, of Avon, beloved husband for 62 years of Rosemarie (DeMaio) Campbell, died on Friday (February 20, 2009) at his home surrounded by his family.

Born and raised in New Haven, son of the late Peter and Helen (Johnston) Campbell, he graduated from Hillhouse High School in 1935 then served in the US Navy for four years.

When World War II began he reenlisted in the US Navy Submarine Service where he served on the USS Sea Lion II in the Pacific. He along with the crew of the Sea Lion II received a Presidential Unit Citation for an incredible rescue of 54 British and Australian POWs during a Typhoon and their part in sinking a destroyer and the only Japanese battleship, the Kongo, sunk by a US submarine. During its time in the Pacific, the USS Sea Lion sunk nine Japanese ships. He received 5 Battle Stars for their efforts in the Pacific and Sea of Japan.

After the war, and his marriage to Rosemarie in 1945, they moved to Hollywood, FL, where he took a job as delivery man for Breedings Drug Store. Because of his outgoing personality and work ethic he took on positions of more responsibility and ultimately became a co-owner with two partners in the well known Hollywood, FL., drug store. He retired in 1966 and pursued his love of gardening, reading, and his passion for investing. He and his wife traveled extensively, living in Williamstown, MA, San Diego, CA, and ultimately Avon.

Besides his wife Rosemarie, he leaves a son Dr. Alister Bruce Campbell and his wife Karen of New Milford; two grandsons Jesse Austin Campbell and Ian Alexander Campbell; three step grandchildren Shannon, Bridget, and Rory Kennedy; a niece Linda Nichols of Williamstown, MA; and three nephews Edward, James, and Robert DeMaio. He was predeceased by a sister Marion Archambeau.

Private Committal Services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery with Naval honors at the convenience of the family.
