Mary Anne Callaghan Schwartzel, 92, of Stone Mountain, GA, died peacefully on Tuesday September 13, 2016. She was the second child and only daughter of Anna and James Callaghan. Mary Anne grew up in Chicago, IL where she graduated from St. Scholastica Academy and attended Mundelein College. In 1945, Mary Anne married James W. Schwartzel. In their 64 years of marriage Mary Anne and Jim lived in Louisville, KY (Jim's hometown), Knoxville, TN, Tampa, FL, Silver Spring, MD, Dallas, TX and finally, Atlanta, GA. In each town, Mary Anne worked her magic to create a warm, loving and beautiful home for their growing family. She was an incredible seamstress, making everything from drapery and upholstery to her children's clothes, Halloween costumes, and her daughter's wedding dress. Mary Anne was also proud of her Irish heritage. St. Patrick's Day was always celebrated with the mandatory Wearin' of the Green and green mashed potatoes at dinner.Mary Anne was preceded in death by her beloved husband Jim in 2009. She is survived by their five children, Joseph C. Schwartzel and his wife, Mimi; Mary Lou Barter and her husband, John; Catherine Gramling and her husband, Ron; Anne Shoemaker and her husband, Robert and Christine Kanne and her husband, David. Mary Anne is also survived by their 14 loving grandchildren: Jim Schwartzel, Jodi Rienzo, Jack Barter, David Barter, Margie Jordan, Tricia Greim, Aaron Henry, Kelli Morrison, Nathan Henry, Chrissie Fagan, Carolyn Davis, Matthew Shoemaker, Jonathan Kanne, Christopher Kanne and 24 great-grandchildren: Joseph and Katherine Schwartzel; Elinor, Evelin and Grayson Rienzo; Maddie and Avery Barter; Matthew and Allison Barter; James and Jack Jordan; Emily, Rachael, Kyle and Allison Greim; Christopher and Madyson Henry; Izzy and Sophie Morrison; Ethan Henry; Mary Anne and Frank Fagan; Charlie and Claire Davis. The funeral service will be held at 9:00 am Saturday, September 17 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 636 Ponce de Leon Ave., Decatur, GA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to FOCUS at www.focus-ga.org. The family will receive guests on Friday, September 16 from 11:30 to 1:00 pm and 6:00 to 8:00 pm with a recitation of the rosary at 7:00 pm at A.S. Turner & Sons, 2773 North Decatur Road, Decatur, GA, 404-292-1551.
