John Ewing Calhoun, Jr 4th child of John Ewing Calhoun and Florida Boinneau Calhoun, was born in Charleston in 1791 and married Martha Davis, a sister of the Hon William R Davis, a member of Congress for four terms from the district which includes the Third Congressional District and some additional territory. The Davis family were residents of Columbia but Warren R Davis removed to Pendleton. The father of Mrs John Ewing Calhoun, Jr was Capt Ransome Davis.

The Index-Journal (Greenwood, South Carolina) · Sat, Mar 13, 1948

John Ewing Calhoun himself and his children all spelled the name “Colhoun” instead of “Calhoun”, using the “o” instead of an “a” in the first syllable. This was an acknowledgement of the Gaelic spelling of the name “Colquhoun”. John Ewing Colhoun is so listed in the Congressional Biographical Directory while his son-in-law and another cousin who served in Congress are listed as “Calhoun”.

The spelling, “Calhoun”, was adopted by all other members of the family and is now general.

The sketch of John Ewing Colhoun in the Congressional Directory says he removed from Charleston to Pendleton and died at his home there and that he is buried in Old Stone Churchyard Cemetery. This is an error. His name does not appear in the list of dead in the Old Stone Church Cemetery. Evidently, he is buried in the Calhoun family cemetery near Clemson.

His daughter, Mrs John C Calhoun, is buried in the Episcopal Church Cemetery in Pendleton.
