Mrs. Babcock was born in Malone, daughter of William and Catherine Wright Caldwell, pioneer residents of Scottish descents who came from Canada. The property at 70 Park Street has been in the family more than 100 years. After attending Malone grade schools and Franklin academy, Mrs. Babcock, then Miss Janet Caldwell, taught in Malone schools.
In 1887, she became the bride of Benjamin A. Babcock of Brasher Falls where the couple made their home. Mr. Babcock operated a grist mill at Brasher Falls and owned the facilities that provided electric power for the areas of Brasher, Winthrop and Nicholville. For a number of years, he served in the state legislature. Following his death in 1913, Mrs. Babcock operated the business for three years and then moved to Malone with her sisters. She became secretary-treasurer of the Green Pond Corp., in New Jersey, a summer resort. She spent her summers at Green Pond and winters in Malone. Later, she retired because of ill health. She was a member of the Methodist Church at Brasher Falls.
Besides the two sisters in Malone, she leaves two nieces, Mrs. J. Wesley Pillou, of Nutley, N. J., and Miss Georgia Caldwell, Oklahoma City, and two nephews, Alan Caldwell, Harrisville, Pa., and Charles Caldwell Chatham, N. J.
Burial was made in Fairview cemetery in Brasher Falls.
