She was the daughter of the late Julius Lewis Hickman and Carrie Moffit Hickman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Clara Mae Formyduval; her brothers, William Henry (Buddy) Hickman and Irvin Louis Hickman.
Gladys is survived by her loving husband of 74 years, Ollie Irvin Caines; a daughter, Wanda Caines Johnston (H.C.) of Wilmington; two sons, Billy Joe Caines (Jo) of Wilmington, and Terry Chris Caines (Peg) of Jamestown; five grandchildren, Lyle Johnston (Dana), Brent Johnston, Kelly Caines Buchanan, Chris Caines, Marcy Caines Murphy (Latasha); and three great-grandchildren, Tanner Johnston, Madison Johnston, and Kelsi Johnston. She also leaves behind one brother-in-law, several sisters-in-law, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Gladys was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed gardening and had been a member of several garden clubs as well as a member of the Ladies Railroad Auxiliary and the Railroaders’ Old Timer’s Club.
The family will receive friends 2-4pm, Sunday, October 5, 2014, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am, Monday, October 6, 2014, also at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel, with the Reverend David McDonald officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Wilmington, NC.
