Lance Cpl. John R. Wimpey Cagle, 19, of Tucker, Ga., died Sept. 28 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C. A native of Atlanta, he graduated in May 2010 from Chamblee Charter High School, where he was a highly decorated JROTC member as a lieutenant colonel. He was a member of Mountain West Church of God and was active in the youth group. He worked as a courtesy clerk with Kroger at Embry Hills during high school, before he left for Parris Island, S.C., and boot camp. Preceded in death by his grandfather, Rev. Robert F. Cagle of Cleveland, TN. Survivors include his mother, Carolyn A. Cagle of Tucker; father, Johnny L. Wimpey of Lawrenceville; grandmother, Mrs. Jeanette Cagle of Cleveland, TN; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Wimpey of Blairsville; brother, Andrew L. Wimpey Cagle of Tucker; step-sister, Rebecca Burge of Pleasant Shade, TN, step-brother, Matt Payne of Cumming; and families, cousins, Olivia Zavodny of Cleveland; and Mark and Todd Garrett of Tucker. John is also survived by eight nephews and nieces, cousins, aunt, Myra Cagle Zavodny of Memphis; uncle, Michael Garrett of Doraville, many friends and his dog Zach.
