Merle R. Byers Merle Richard Byers, 89, of Hornertown, Petrolia, died at 1 a.m. Sunday at Butler Memorial Hospital following a period of failing health.

He was born in Troutman, Butler County, on Sept. 25, 1918, and was the son of Herbert E. and Nora Alice Bish Byers. Mr. Byers was a Protestant and had attended Fairview Township Karns City High School.

He served in the Army in 1945 and 1946 in Japan, and was a member of the American Legion of Chicora. He enjoyed traveling and hunting. He retired in 1978 after 40 years from Koppers Chemical Co. in Petrolia, where he was a shift foreman.

He married the former Bessie M. Maxwell June 12, 1940, at St. John's Reformed Church in Chicora.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Earla M.Crawford and her husband, William, of Saxonburg and Merlene Uenking and her husband, Thomas, of Chicora; two sons, Richard A. Byers and his wife, Diane, of Stockton, Calif., and Daryle L. Byers and his wife, Miriam Ruth, of Karns City; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death was a daughter, Darla Lou Byers, who died June 28, 1941, and a sister, Mrs. Dorothy McIntyre.Byers

- Friends of Merle Richard Byers, who died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Richard D. Hillis Funeral Home in Petrolia.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Bear Creek Cemetery, Petrolia.

Military honors will be accorded at graveside by the members of the Chicora American Legion and the VFW.
