Arthur Wendell Byam, 93, of South Chelmsford, Massachusetts, passed away on Friday, June 3, 2011.

Arthur was born in Carlisle, MA on July 28, 1917, the youngest of ten children of the late Lyman A. and Grace Hutchins Byam. Arthur graduated from Chelmsford High School in 1936 and from Brown University in 1940.

During World War II, he trained as a Naval Aviator and later served in the Army Air Corps, where he earned a commission as a First Lieutenant. As a navigator of a B-24, in the 456th Bomber Group, 15th Air Force Division based in Italy, he flew 19 missions over Europe. He received the Air Medal and numerous campaign ribbons for his service.

Arthur married Roberta Estelle Kearney in May 1948 and worked for Aetna Life & Casualty in Hartford, CT for thirty-five years, retiring as a Tax Administrator. Arthur lived in Manchester, CT from 1958 until he moved back to his home town, and his favorite place to be, the Camp on Hart Pond in South Chelmsford, in 2001.

Although Arthur enjoyed playing golf and tennis, even into his 80's, he was fascinated with baseball and played at every opportunity from the age of six through high school. Arthur was truly a life-long ardent fan of the game, especially the Red Sox, and often spoke of having met Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio.

Arthur was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Roberta. He leaves his son Richard D. Byam and his wife Debra of Manchester, CT and his daughter Beverly Byam Vieira and her husband Stephen of Westport, Mass. He also leaves two granddaughters: Elizabeth Colby Byam and Rachel Debra Byam, of Manchester, CT and his special niece Pamela Byam Rivard and her husband Bud of Chelmsford. Arthur is survived by his sister, Rachel E. Meyer of Seattle, WA., but was predeceased by his other brothers and sisters: Arzella Byam, Edwin Byam, Evelyn Cowdray, Viola Nickerson, Lyman Byam, Kenneth Byam, Amy Volk, and Frank Byam.
