United States Army Officer, Author. With the United States entry into World War One, Colonel Butts assumed acting command of the 6th Infantry Brigade in January 1918 for a period of roughly one month. He was then assigned as commanding officer of the 30th Infantry Brigade. It was with the 30th that he would be awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for action in June of 1918 at Bois d'Aigremont, France. In August of 1918, Butts was assigned as acting commanding officer of the 5th Infantry Brigade, a position he held for three days until Brigadier General Fred Sladen. After the war, Colonel Butts would stay in the military until retiring at the rank of Brigadier General. Throughout his career, he would also write books articles on physical exercises and drilling.
