SUFFOLK: Alton Gerlin Butler, 82, died Dec. 22, 2007.

Mr. Butler was born in Suffolk, the son of the late Viola Holland Butler Jernigan and Thomas Walter Butler.

He was a United States Army veteran having served during World War II where he received the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars.

He later went on to work for Briggs Motor Garage and then the State Highway Department. He retired as the owner and operator of A.G. Butler's Garage. He was a member of Oakland Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Bernice Ruth Woolard Butler of Suffolk; daughter and son-in-law, Cathy Ruth Butler Kirk and Bill of Zuni; sons and daughters-in-law, Alton Ray Butler, Rayford Emerson and Frankie Butler, Philip Lee and Terrie Butler, all of Suffolk; grandchildren, Kevin Ray Butler (Cameron), Philip Lee Butler II (Caroline), David Alton Butler, Ronnie Dean Sightler and Donnie Dean Sightler; great-grandchildren, Phillip Lei Butler and Jacob Thomas Butler; sister, Evelyn Bradshaw; and brothers, Wilbur Butler, James Jernigan and Dewitt Jernigan.

A funeral was held Monday in Oakland Christian Church with the Rev. Mark Burns officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery with military honors. Parr Funeral Home and Crematory, 3515 Robs Drive, Suffolk, was in charge of arrangements.
