Mary married Coleman "Colby" Johnson in 1849 per their 1867 marriage declaration. He first appears in the Providence Baptist Church minutes in 1856. She may also have long been a member of the church but doesn't appear in the minutes until 1868. Both of them participated in the 4th of July 1868 group announcement of their departure from that white church. That departure was tied to their participation in a new black church which subsequently purchased the Old Stone Church building and property. Coleman had been enslaved by William Johnson and then by William's wife Elizabeth Johnson. Coleman's mother Sarah lived with the couple in the 1870 Clark County census. Coleman's sister Mary married Jordan Hawkins circa 1854, at which time she was enslaved by Peter Bean. Coleman died in 1874 and was buried in the Winchester Cemetery.
Mary (nee Bush) Johnson married Cawley Bell on October 14, 1875 in Clark County, Kentucky and he informally adopted her son, Ben Johnson. They also provided a home for many of their nieces and nephews.
