Jane married Rhodes Bates in 1855, their marriage was recorded in Clark County on April 4, 1870. In the 1870 census, the couple and their seven children living with them were recorded under the surname Woodward for an unknown reason. The 1900 census reported that Jane had been the mother of 14 children, 5 of whom were still alive at that time. Some of her known children were James Marshall, Jerry, Martha, Aaron, Evaline, Sarah, Emmanuel, Louisa and Robert Bates. Rhodes Bates passed away prior to 1880.
After she was widowed, Jane supported her children by working, in Winchester, as a cook. She contracted a case of influenza in February of 1915, with a duration of two months, which weakened her constitution. Mrs. Bates passed away from the effects of organic heart disease, complicated by cardiac dilatation, with a duration of one year.
